I’m processing a scan in Exstar that has some artefacts located inside corners that I want to delete. I cannot work out how to highlight them without also highlighting the background scan data.
Is there a way to do this that I cannot figure out?

I agree. Unfortunately, in point cloud mode in the current version of the program (hopefully for now), there’s no option to enable a “foreground selection” option (like in other scanning programs). As a result, you have to select everything you need on, say, the front side, then rotate the object and remove the “unnecessary” selection from the back, looking at it from the side. But this method is only suitable if the object has a noticeable thickness… 1 mm or more.

How do you unselect from the opposite side? Doesn’t it just unselect everything?
Shift+LMB - Select, Ctrl+LMB - Unselect (I usually use a Lasso selection)
I was referring to this scenario, for example, when you select something on the front of a plate to delete a section, but both sides are also selected. Then, you simply turn it over and see two separate selected “groups” (the one you need and the one that’s selected on the back). Then, using Ctrl, you select (or deselect) the part you don’t want to delete. Sometimes, on complex surfaces, this operation has to be repeated many times, but until the program can do this natively, you have to use “workarounds.”
There are two methods to unselect the data behind the selected areas:
1.Adjust to a suitable angle and use shift+left mouse to select and shift+ control to unselect the data, you can refer to OBN_RacerMan’s answer , I think his answer is perfect.
2.You can also leave the areas that you’re having trouble deleting and directly mesh the data, and when the mesh is generated, there will be a “select through”/"“select visible” option in the software which allows you to highlight/ not highlight the areas that are overlapped in certain angle.You can refer to the picture below.
