Hi!
While scanning a customers brake caliper with 0.1mm resolution i have found that the quality of the point cloud and the resulting mesh is very bad.
For confirmation if my scanner is alright I scanned the same part with 0.5mm resolution and the quality is light years ahead.
The surface of the part is very smooth as it was soda blasted and then powdercoated.
I am using global marker and high frequency scanning with the modus for reflecting objects.
Am i expecting too much? If no, what am I doing wrong and how can I optimize my 0.1mm experience?
0.1mm
0.5mm
Thanks!
Best regards,
RoB
Hi,
Thanks for the detailed information. To help us better understand the issue with the 0.1 mm resolution, could you please confirm a few details?
What is the approximate size of the brake caliper?
When scanning at 0.1 mm resolution, did you have the Data Quality indicator enabled?
When using the Data Quality indicator, did the scanned model turn blue overall, or were there areas showing other colors?
This information will help us determine whether the issue is related to the scanning distance, surface characteristics, or scanning quality.

I tried a different model. There is something strange here.
This is done with 0.1mm resolution and it seems that the top surface is kind of allright but the side surfaces are not.
0.1mm with changed orientation. Seems to have made it worse
Next one is 0.1mm HF off - no difference

And here are the surface pictures of the meshed objects above. As You can see, all surfaces are perfect, clean and should therefore be perfect in the scan.

Here is a scan with a light coat of attblime scanning spray.
Mode for reflective objects ON:

Mode for reflective objects OFF:
So, it seems that with the spray and the mode for shiny objects on, the quality gets better, however, the rubber parts still have limited quality and in my opinion, the necessity for scan spray should not be a mandatory thing if the user wants to scan with 0.1mm resolution
