Hey Rusty, really cool to read about all your experiments! I totally get the frustration with scanning smooth tubes — I’ve been there myself. Tiny temporary “bump” markers, like little bits of clay or tack, might give the scanner something to lock onto without moving around too much.Another fun approach is to 3D print a small test version of the part using PETG filament with some extra texture, then scan that. It’s a safe way to figure out angles and marker placement before touching the real part.

I’ve tried all sorts of extra textures/features to the tubing, both visual and 3 dimensional, but I do think the key is to eliminate the big open areas between the tubes so it stops trying to look past them. I did a really quick test using painters tape strung between the tubes of the engine mount I’ve been using for testing, and that helped the fast mode more than anything I’ve tried. The spooky tape may or may not make it better. I do need to add a few small markers just to give myself easier spots for alignment.

For a fuselage, it’s almost always going to be a mirror image from left to right, so if I can just scan half of it I’ll have everything. Fortunately none of this is important, so it’s more for the challenge now.

It is a work that with a great challenge. For the chassis, you can print it with ABS filament.
