I purchased the Rockit recently in preparation for a trip to scan some ancient Egyptian furniture in a museum study room. I’m trying to get familiar with it beforehand and there are a few things I would like to have a better understanding of. First, at what point after stopping the scan can I safely turn the unit off to save battery? It seems if too soon, the texture doesn’t load. Second, at what point should I assume the scan is “done”. I’ve tried making sure the scan is completely blue but that seems to increase lag, tracking errors and I get an immediate crash when trying to open projects that I’ve spent too long scanning (MacBook Pro M4 24GB). Any other tips, specifically about using the IR mode on chair-size objects would be welcome. Thanks!
Generally speaking, you can safely power off the scanner about 1 minute after stopping the scan. The data is processed on your computer, not on the scanner itself, so texture rendering depends on your computer’s performance.
Turning fully blue is not mandatory — it only indicates extremely dense data. If you do not require overly dense point clouds, you do not need to wait for the scan to turn blue. You can stop scanning once valid data has appeared.
For chair-sized objects, IR mode is highly suitable. You can attach markers on a ladder nearby, and try to distribute them randomly.
