Faulty USB Connection from Vega to Desktop Computer

[I’ve opened a support ticket about this, but in the meantime I will share my (cumbersome!) workaround.]

The issue I’m having is that, even using the supplied USB-C cable (which appears to be a standard, nylon-braided UGREEN USB-C to USB-C cable), when I try to “Import from scanner” into StarVision I am unable to connect the Vega to my desktop computer running Windows 11 Pro. I always get an error message, “Replace Data Cable”, and the Vega does not connect. (FYI, yes, there is also an option to upload scans to the Shining 3D Cloud, but the maximum file size is very limited–and much smaller than most of my scans.)

As suggested by Einstar Support in other threads on this forum, I have checked Windows Defender Firewall and changed the settings for both instances of Starvision Binary. Unfortunately, that solution did not work for me; I still get the same error.

However, in addition to trying other USB-C cables, and connecting them to different ports (front and back) on my desktop computer (none of which had any effect on the error), I also tried connecting the supplied USB cable to my ancient Dell XPS13 laptop which, surprisingly, had no problem connecting with the Vega. (FYI, the Windows Defender Firewall settings on my laptop only include “Public”–I have NOT changed them to include “Private” or “Domain”. I can also confirm that no other USB-C cable I tried would work, but I only tried a few I had lying around.)

Having finally managed to connect a computer via USB to the Vega, I used the “Import to Model Library” function in a new installation of StarVision on my laptop to download the scans on the Vega. So far, so good. But, I cannot effectively work with these large scans on my laptop…

To get the scans onto my desktop computer I connect a portable USB drive to my laptop computer. Then I “Export” each scan in my Model Library from StarVision to a new folder on the USB drive I’ve named “Shining3d”. Once the file transfer is completed, I disconnect the portable USB drive from my laptop and plug it into my desktop computer. From StarVision on my desktop computer I’m then able to “Import local file”, selecting the new Shining3d folder on the portable USB drive and the “scan.proj” file associated with the scan. (FYI, I don’t need to use the supplied USB-C cable for these transfers.)

This convoluted process eventually results in the scan being made available in the Model Library on my desktop computer, where I can work with it and/or export it elsewhere, as necessary. It works, but it is a huge waste of time.

My desktop computer is a few years old, and doesn’t have a native USB-C port. Whenever I connected the Vega to the normal USB ports it gave me that message about problems with the data cable. In my case, I could still transfer, though slowly. I managed to install a board to add a USB-C port, and it transfers a bit faster with no complaints about the cable. My computer does have the latest version USB 3 ports, so if you have an older port version I wonder if that would cause it to not transfer?

The other issue with older ports is power. The battery runs down rather than charging when you only have the lower power available from non USB-C ports.
