I’ve had my scanner a few months now. I like it and like using it in IR mode, it’s fast and very good at refinding itself if it loses postion. When i have to use markers though (in IR or laser), I have to be veeeery careful not to get the ‘tracking lost’ message, because then it takes ages to refind itself.
So I was wondering, have any of you have figured out what treggers the scanner to suddenly lose tracking? I know there need to be 4 markers visible at least, but it seems to lose tracking even if there are visible markers even moving slowly. Just seems a bit random.
Is it confused by curving surfaces that change the outline, or when a marker becomes occluded by part of the part that is being scanned? Not sure.
Is the FOV of the scanner less than what the screen is showing? Maybe I think it can see 4 or 5 markers but actually they are on the edge of the scanner FOV? maybe the depth of field is important. Who knows?
Hi there, thanks a lot for sharing your experience! I totally get this frustrating tracking lost issue.
Your guesses make sense: curved surfaces and marker occlusion are common triggers. Also, markers right at the edge of the FOV are much easier to drop out of detection, even if they look visible on screen.
Quick question: roughly how many markers do you usually place on your object for scanning? Do you have a picture of that? That will help us figure this out better.
I think I’ve found a solution - fill my part with stickers. I put 67 stickers on the part and the global markers look like stars in a galaxy and now it scans much better.
It seems sensitive to distance and losing tracking when you flip over a sharp edge but with enough stickers and some scanner spray it works.
I prefer using feature tracking but accept that sometimes lots of markers is the only way.
